Train Types in Turkey: YHT, Mainline, Regional and Sleeper Services

Choose the service before the seat
High-speed, mainline and regional describe types of service; a seat, couchette or sleeper describes accommodation. Check both. A long journey or an overnight departure does not by itself include a bed.
High-speed and mainline trains
YHT services cover the principal high-speed corridors. Conventional mainline trains operate on other long-distance routes and may provide different seating or sleeping arrangements. A route described as intercity is not automatically a high-speed route.
Regional services
Regional trains connect nearby cities and towns and can be useful for trips such as İzmir to Selçuk. Their reservation, stopping pattern, and ticket process may differ from long-distance services, so use the information attached to the exact train.
Sleeper and tourism-oriented trains
Some long-distance journeys use seated coaches, couchettes, or sleeping compartments, but the available accommodation depends on the service. Tourism-oriented and regular trains on a similar corridor can have different sales conditions and stopping patterns.
- Choose by route and date before comparing accommodation.
- Verify whether a reservation is required.
- Check current luggage and onboard-service information.
A service name is not a booking promise
YHT is the high-speed brand; mainline expresses cover longer conventional routes, while regional services are useful for local corridors. Overnight travel can involve an ordinary seat, a couchette or a sleeper depending on the train and current carriage allocation. A long-distance journey is not automatically a sleeper journey.
Before comparing two trains, write down the route, accommodation type and exact departure station. For night trains, check the arrival date as well as the departure date. For international services, consult the international sales information rather than assuming a domestic search covers the route.
