Istanbul to Sofia Night Train: Tickets and Border Planning

An international overnight journey

The Istanbul–Sofia rail journey links Türkiye and Bulgaria and is commonly planned as an overnight trip. Verify the current service, travel date and carriage arrangements with the operators before arranging accommodation or connecting trains. A sleeper or couchette description does not guarantee that every accommodation type is available on your departure.

Search in both travel directions if you are comparing a return trip: the departure time, local arrival date and ticketing arrangements can differ. Use the local times shown on each ticket, including any seasonal time-zone difference.

Plan access to Halkalı

Halkalı, on Istanbul’s European side, is the station to investigate for the international sleeper. It is not Sirkeci in the historic centre and not Söğütlüçeşme on the Asian side. Verify the station on the actual ticket and check how to reach it from your accommodation.

If using Marmaray or other urban transport, check its operating hours for the relevant day and allow time to find the international departure area. Do not rely on a metro connection that may have finished by the time you arrive.

Buy through an appropriate international channel

International sleeper ticketing may use different sales channels from domestic YHT tickets. If the journey is absent from the domestic e-ticket search, consult current TCDD international information and Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ). Verify where tickets can be bought, which accommodation is included and whether any additional supplement is required.

Do not assume a rail pass covers every reservation or berth charge. Keep the original seller’s ticket reference and rules for changes or cancellation.

Border formalities and onward travel

Carry the passport and entry documents required for your nationality and itinerary. Overnight border controls can interrupt sleep, and you may need to follow instructions to leave the train. Check current entry requirements with the relevant official authorities before travel.

Build a generous margin before a flight or separately booked train from Sofia. Arrival time is not a guarantee, and a border delay can affect the next leg. TurkeyTrain provides independent information and cannot issue, amend or refund the international ticket.

Timetable notice checked on 11 October 2026

BDZ reports revised times within Türkiye from 10 October to 12 December 2026. Its linked timetable has a narrower validity period, so select the document covering your travel date and recheck before departure. Advance sales may be shortened by engineering work; the usual sales window is not a guarantee.

A couchette or sleeping-berth reservation is mandatory in addition to the travel ticket. Verify the total and accommodation with the seller.
