Istanbul Train Stations Explained: Söğütlüçeşme, Halkalı and Key Rail Hubs

Why Istanbul has several rail stations
Istanbul spans Europe and Asia and uses multiple stations for intercity, suburban, and international rail services. A search for “Istanbul” is therefore not enough to identify where a particular train departs.
Söğütlüçeşme and Halkalı
Söğütlüçeşme on the Asian side is an important stop for YHT services. Halkalı on the European side is another major rail hub. Other stations may appear depending on the route and service, so always follow the complete station name in the official result.
Plan the city transfer first
Measure travel from your actual accommodation to the named station and account for traffic, public transport changes, station entrances, and security.
- Do not navigate to a historic station name without checking the current departure.
- Confirm the European or Asian side of the city.
- Save the station name in Turkish for local navigation.
Match the service to its terminal
Söğütlüçeşme is a major Asian-side YHT departure to investigate; Halkalı is on the European side and is important for international sleeper planning. Sirkeci is a historic station and an urban-rail location, not a safe default for every intercity departure. A hotel near Sirkeci does not mean your Ankara or Sofia train leaves there.
Pendik can appear in both urban transport and intercity planning, but similarly named metro and railway stops are not necessarily the same interchange. Use the exact station on your ticket, inspect the map and plan the final walking route with your luggage.
