Istanbul Airport to Train Stations: IST, SAW and YHT

Planning diagram for Istanbul Airport to Train Stations: IST, SAW and YHT

Start with the airport code

Istanbul has two major passenger airports: Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side. They have different rail access routes. Read the code on your flight booking before following any airport-to-train-station directions.

An airport metro service is not a direct YHT intercity train. Urban transport tickets and the intercity rail ticket are separate parts of the journey; do not assume one purchase covers both.

From Istanbul Airport (IST)

M11 links Istanbul Airport with the Gayrettepe and Halkalı directions. The Halkalı–Arnavutköy extension opened on 19 June 2026, with passenger operation beginning on 20 June. Consider this connection for a train departing Halkalı; an Asian-side station such as Söğütlüçeşme requires an additional urban connection. Check current operating hours and the transfer from the metro to the railway platforms at Halkalı.

Calculate the full airport process: disembarking, passport control where applicable, baggage collection, walking to transport, waiting and transfers. The metro running time alone is not the time from your aircraft to a YHT platform.

From Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW)

The M4 metro serves Sabiha Gökçen Airport on the Asian side. A connection with Marmaray at Ayrılık Çeşmesi can be relevant when planning onward rail access. Check the current map for the exact station on your intercity ticket and confirm any walking connection.

Pendik metro station and the intercity railway station named Pendik should not be treated as the same platform or a guaranteed immediate interchange. Compare the actual locations before choosing a route with luggage.

Protect your connection with enough time

Confirm whether your YHT departs from Söğütlüçeşme, Halkalı, Pendik or another station. Check transport hours, accessibility and the final walking route. If your flight arrives late in the day, compare a flexible ticket or an overnight stay with the risk of a tight connection.

Separately booked flights, urban transport and YHT tickets should not be assumed to provide through-journey protection. TurkeyTrain does not quote a guaranteed airport transfer time or sell a combined airport-and-train ticket.

  • Match IST or SAW to the correct airport route.
  • Use the exact departure station printed on the train ticket.
  • Check official service notices before leaving the airport.
  • Allow a margin for immigration, baggage and delays.
